Personal Effects to be Imported by a Passenger

Passengers coming from places like Dubai, China, Thailand, and the like
may be under special scrutiny by the customs office as such
places are frequented by passengers who trade 'personal effects'.

Who is a Passenger?

A passenger is a person who comes to Ethiopia via Ethiopian international airport or crossing the Ethiopian border.

A passenger usually includes an Ethiopian or foreigner who returns to Ethiopia after a brief visit or travel outside Ethiopia.

It also includes an Ethiopian living abroad or foreigner who comes to Ethiopia for family visit, meeting, business purpose and the like.

A passenger may be required to show passport and air ticket to the customs officer at the airport.

What Can a Passenger Import Into Ethiopia?

A passenger is allowed to import personal effects without paying customs duties.

The passenger is also allowed to import some goods paying customs duties when the goods exceed a limit and the amount is not considered commercial quantity.

The passenger is required to pay twice the import taxes payable on the goods if the goods are considered commercial quantity. However, the person will be prosecuted for criminal offenses when such imports are made repetitively.
